The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a significant legislative measure introduced by the European Union (EU) to enhance the transparency and accountability of companies regarding their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts.

Scanfil started preparing for the CSRD in 2023. Data collection with an audit trail and the first draft report were produced in August 2024. All the hard work will pay off in early 2025, when Scanfil’s first CSRD report will be published.

The CSRD aims to provide investors, analysts, consumers, and other stakeholders with clear and consistent information about a company’s sustainability performance. This transparency and standardized reporting enable stakeholders to compare and make better-informed decisions based on reliable ESG data. Companies must report not only how their activities impact the environment and society, but also how sustainability matters affect their financial performance. This dual focus ensures a holistic view of a company’s sustainability efforts, and it is called Double Materiality Analysis.

To ensure the accuracy and completeness of the reported data, the CSRD requires third-party auditing of all disclosures. This independent verification adds an extra layer of trust and reliability to the reported information.

Does all this create value for the companies? By providing clear and consistent ESG data, companies can build greater trust with customers, investors, and other stakeholders. This transparency can attract more interest and drive company revenue, profitability, reputation, and the price of money. It is sometimes forgotten that reporting on sustainability metrics can highlight areas where companies can improve efficiency, such as reducing energy consumption or waste. These improvements can lead to cost savings and operational benefits.

This aims to reduce pollution, better resource management, and overall positive environmental outcomes. It can also lead to improved working conditions, fairer treatment of employees, and stronger community relations.

The CSRD represents a significant step forward in promoting sustainability and transparency in the corporate world. By mandating comprehensive and standardized sustainability reporting, the directive benefits both companies and society, fostering a more sustainable and accountable business environment.

In this series of articles, the leading professionals from AFRY share their insights on topics that affect Scanfil, our customers and the whole industry. This article is written by Leena Sivill, Senior Principal at AFRY.

Hydrogen has emerged as a strong contender in energy and climate policy discussions in recent years. It can solve many practical challenges related to transitioning away from fossil energy sources and feedstocks. However, the effectiveness of hydrogen economy in climate change mitigation requires that hydrogen is produced in a carbon-neutral manner.

Hydrogen can be produced in a carbon-neutral manner through the electrolysis process using renewable energy sources or through steam reforming of biogas (known as green hydrogen), or by producing hydrogen conventionally from fossil fuels and capturing the resulting carbon dioxide (known as blue hydrogen). The role of hydrogen from nuclear power has also been raised as a question in the climate debate.

Hydrogen is currently cheaper to produce from fossil fuels (natural gas, heavy fuel oil, and coal) through steam reforming or partial oxidation (known as grey hydrogen) than from alternative energy sources. However, the investment and operating costs of electrolysis technology are expected to decrease in the future, and the availability of renewable electricity is expected to increase, which will facilitate the transition to a carbon-neutral hydrogen economy. In addition, strong policy measures are needed to ensure that the transition occurs widely and quickly enough to meet climate targets.

Policy instruments to boost the hydrogen economy
As part of the European Union’s Green Deal program, two strategies were published in July 2020 to promote the adoption of low-carbon solutions. One of these strategies concerns the interaction between energy systems (sector integration strategy), and the other concerns the development of hydrogen infrastructure and markets (hydrogen strategy). These strategies aim to prepare EU policy measures to integrate hydrogen into EU and member state infrastructure projects, as well as energy market and infrastructure regulation.

The resurgence of the hydrogen economy is driven by the need to achieve carbon neutrality. The role that hydrogen finally plays will depend on the policy measures, markets, and ultimately the choices made by companies and end-users participating in the supply chain. At this stage, infrastructure and regulatory readiness must be built to ensure that the operational conditions for a hydrogen economy are in place at least for the implementation of the most essential solutions.

Affordable electricity prices and a strong transmission network are advantages in the hydrogen economy
Hydrogen is currently used in many industrial processes, e.g., refining petroleum, treating metals, producing fertilizers and processing food. The question is how much of the current use of hydrogen could be converted to carbon-neutral hydrogen, and how much hydrogen will be needed for these industries in the future.

Another obvious question is where hydrogen could be used for new industrial and transportation solutions, and how much demand for hydrogen would arise from these.

The third question is what opportunities the hydrogen economy opens up for companies. The hydrogen value chains extend from carbon-neutral electricity production through hydrogen to various end products. Different production, storage, transportation, and distribution technologies and services are needed in different parts of the value chains and investment or product life cycles. Furthermore, as hydrogen economy is broadly connected to many existing value chains and energy infrastructures as a whole, the concept of sector integration goes hand in hand with the hydrogen economy.

A key question throughout Europe is the extent to which existing gas infrastructure could be used for hydrogen transmission and distribution in the future, if/when the use of fossil gas decreases. With regards to gas infrastructure, there is a lively discussion about the significance of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) alongside carbon-neutral hydrogen. CCS and CCU would enable the use of existing gas and fuel infrastructure for hydrogen production and transmission. On the other hand, in the hydrogen strategy, CCS is seen as a temporary solution, and CCU does not change the carbon balance. Another key question is what requirements the hydrogen economy will place on power systems.

Hydrogen economy in the startup phase – where should public funding be directed?
We are in the startup phase of the hydrogen economy, where research and pilot projects as well as feasibility studies are being carried out to start commercial production. Legislation and regulation have not yet been largely implemented, and the technical concept and financing of commercial projects are being prepared. Pilot and demonstration projects are competing for public funding, but it is still unclear where other public support will be granted in the future, either nationally or through the EU’s common financing instruments.

For the future, it is essential to understand the importance of public funding for the development of hydrogen economy. For this reason, several countries have developed national hydrogen strategies aimed at achieving both energy and climate goals and ensuring the economic benefits of projects. However, countries are not responsible for individual company strategies, even if a national hydrogen strategy exists. Its implementation depends primarily on the companies’ own ability to conduct business using hydrogen, which is also defined by many other factors.

This poses a challenge for directing public funding – how to define among the range of projects those where the use of public funds is justified. The EU taxonomy has been created to help member countries direct funding towards measures that promote sustainable development. In addition, alternative future scenarios need to be considered, where the development of the hydrogen economy is guided by different drivers. These increase the understanding of the consequences, benefits, drawbacks, and interdependencies of different development paths from the perspective of energy, climate, and the economy.

The community unites women from all Scanfil locations into a valuable network driving Women Empowerment Principles from UN Global Compact.

“The group was founded in 2022, after Scanfil became the Signatory of Women Empowerment Principles as defined by UN Global Compact. The SWAT Team meets monthly to discuss how to enhance gender equality and inclusivity at Scanfil”, tells Malgorzata Klimkowska, Global Human Resources Director and the chairperson of SWAT, and continues “I am proud to tell that we have initiated many great and successful activities in 2022, and I am excited to continue the work in 2023”.

In addition to internal initiatives, the team is also driving charity initiatives. To celebrate the International Women’s Day and based on SWAT’s proposal, Scanfil has decided to donate money to UNICEF for the humanitarian aid supporting women and children affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

We decided to donate funds to UNICEF and support their actions:
– to ensure that the affected children and families have access to safe drinking water and sanitation services – critical in preventing illness in the early days of a crisis,
– to identify separated and unaccompanied children and work to reunite them with their families, as well as provide children with psychological first aid,
– and coordinating the nutrition responses, especially for young children under 2 years and pregnant women of the displaced population in Syria. They are mobilizing essential nutrition supplies from across the region and delivering essential health and nutrition services through mobile teams.

Plastic, aluminum, or glass bottles and cans have become an essential part of our daily lives. At lunch, dinner, during and after sports, and almost every occasion, we drink something which comes in a can or bottle.

You can imagine nearly 1.4 trillion cans or bottles are potentially a lot of waste. However, TOMRA doesn’t see this as a waste – they see it as a possibility to recycle and reuse.

“We, at TOMRA, have a mission of being the leader in the resource revolution by creating sensor-based solutions for optimal resource productivity,” says Tove Andersen, CEO at TOMRA. Tove continues, “Circular economy, an economy based on eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and the regeneration of nature – has been at the heart of TOMRA since it was established in 1972.”

TOMRA is the world leader in reverse vending machine solutions. The company has approximately 80,000 installed machines in over 60 markets. Scanfil is the preferred manufacturing partner in reverse vending machines.

“Tomra and Scanfil entered into a strategic partnership in 2005 and Scanfil has continuously developed the manufacturing and supply chain services together with Tomra in order to meet their high market demands for availability and flexibility”, says Sales Director Lars Skanke at Scanfil.

Scanfil is proud of being TOMRA’s manufacturing partner and helping them and the world recycle and recuse materials to save natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions.

“We at Scanfil take sustainability seriously in our procurement practices. As a manufacturing partner, we don’t have our products. This brings us heightened responsibility in sourcing and manufacturing. We have built our supply chains to meet our and our customers’ high sustainability standards”, states Tomi Takanen, the Director of Global Sourcing at Scanfil.

Scanfil has several ways to ensure that its suppliers meet our high sustainability standards. First, all new suppliers go through New Supplier Introduction Process, in which we compare all the potential suppliers to Scanfil’s sustainability standards. In addition, Scanfil utilizes EcoVadis responsible procurement platform in the assessment process. EcoVadis is one of the world’s largest and most trusted providers of business sustainability ratings. EcoVadis platform enables Scanfil to tackle the challenge of complex global supply chains that are challenging to evaluate in terms of sustainability.

Scanfil has factories in seven countries and three continents. Closeness to our suppliers and in conducting supplier audits even on short notice. A wide customer base and customer operations in different types of businesses mean a broad supplier base to us. It takes people and tools to manage, but it is also a great asset to Scanfil and its customers.

Close cooperation with the suppliers in terms of sustainability is an essential part of Scanfil’s procurement practices.

“We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our practices meet our high sustainability standards. In addition, we encourage our suppliers in sustainability-related matters and aim to enhance our collaboration with the suppliers even further,” says Mats Lindblad, Director of Global Quality and Sustainability.

Sustainability and responsibility are topics that interest investors. We interviewed Niina Arkko, Senior Responsible Investment Specialist at Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company on sustainability, sustainable practices, and sustainability reporting. Ilmarinen is Finland’s largest private earnings-related pension insurance company, and at the end of June 2022, the value of its investments was 56.7 billion euros. It is also a shareholder of Scanfil plc, holds 1.7% of the shares.

According to Niina Arkko, investors have arising interest in sustainability and responsibility. Sustainability is an essential factor in every investment decision at Ilmarinen. It is also a business question.

“In our view, companies that focus on ESG are often better risk-adjusted long-term investments”, Niina Arkko explains. “In addition to our high standard in sustainability, all our investments need to meet other investment criteria, for example, concerning return expectations.”

Companies’ sustainability practices and their reporting enables investors and other stakeholders to assess the company and its sustainability better. Niina Arkko reminds that reporting about all sustainability practices – even those that might seem self-evident – is highly recommended:

“In general, Finnish companies have high-quality reporting, but sometimes companies might not report about all their sustainability practices because they find certain topics low risk for them, such as human rights related issues. However, not reporting them might give a wrong impression, or lead to a lower scoring in sustainability data providers’ ratings. We are open to an in-depth discussion with our portfolio companies if they have questions regarding ESG reporting and practices.“

Niina Arkko also encourages companies to focus on different aspects of sustainability.

“At the moment, companies have focused on reporting their C02 emissions. However, there are arising interests in biodiversity and natural capital. Even if they are more difficult to measure, it would be great if more companies would report about these things as well,” Niina Arkko says, and continues “In addition, I would encourage companies to report also about their net impacts.”

At the moment, companies are often reporting only about their emissions even if the investors would be interested in understanding the net impacts of the company. For instance, if company’s products or services help their customers to decrease their emissions, their net impact, i.e. so called handprint, might be positive.

“It would be beneficial to give some data about the positive side as well even if there are no standard handprint methodologies available yet.” Niina Arkko reminds.
