Finding alternative components to help with the challenges in the supply chain has become even more crucial in the recent years. Reijo Kalenius, Development Manager at Scanfil, is one of the key persons helping to find alternative components for our customers. Since the work can be quite unpredictable and hectic, it also offers exciting stories. Therefore, we asked Reijo to share one of his success stories with us.

Case Toyota: Finding an alternative component within 6 weeks
“At the beginning of September 2022, I got a call from our Chief Procurement Officer, Markku Kosunen. He told me that one of our suppliers had rescheduled their deliveries for a component that we need in our Toyota production, and that the delivery date was postponed until Mid-October,” Reijo starts and continues “He asked me to check if we could find a replacement for the component”. Even if the assignment seemed like a mission impossible, Reijo promised to investigate it.

Reijo immediately reached out to our component engineers and Lars who is the original designer of the product. According to Reijo, the tricky part was the grounded shield in the crystal, which is not common in these components. “Anyway, the team quickly aligned on the technical requirements of the component and started to contact alternative manufacturers. Lars, the original designer of the product, also contacted the customer to agree on the verification activities needed to qualify the new component,” tells Reijo.

Already next day, our component engineer came back with a replacement candidate. “We checked the datasheet, and were excited to see that it seemed to work for us!”, rejoices Reijo.

Immediately, Łukasz from the Global Sourcing Team proceeded to checking the sample availability and lead-time for the first batches with our distributor. He informed that samples for testing were on the way from Hong Kong, and Toyota also gave us a green light for a “risk buy” of the first batch needed in production. The supplier promised to deliver the first batch before our production stop in early October, so the project had gone from impossible to possible within a week from the start.

“By late September, our team in Sieradz had built samples for both Scanfil Åtvidaberg and Toyota to run the needed verification tests, and they both proceeded quickly with the tests. By October 7, we completed the verification tests and had the new crystal in stock. On top of solving the immediate shortage that faced us, the supply chain for Toyota will be much less risky also in the future, since we now have an alternative source for this component,” tells Reijo.

This case is just one example of how we can help to identify and change existing products to help with challenges in the supply chain. We have done similar projects to also other customers, and we have clear processes for running these projects.

TOMRA has a mission of being the leader in the resource revolution by creating sensor-based solutions for optimal resource productivity.

Globally nearly 1.4 trillion beverage containers are used per year. Plastic, aluminum, or glass bottles and cans have become an essential part of our daily lives. At lunch, dinner, during and after sports, and almost every occasion, we drink something which comes in a can or bottle.

You can imagine nearly 1.4 trillion cans or bottles are potentially a lot of waste. However, TOMRA doesn’t see this as a waste – they see it as a possibility to recycle and reuse.

“We, at TOMRA, have a mission of being the leader in the resource revolution by creating sensor-based solutions for optimal resource productivity,” says Tove Andersen, CEO at TOMRA. Tove continues, “Circular economy, an economy based on eliminating waste and pollution, circulating products and materials, and the regeneration of nature – has been at the heart of TOMRA since it was established in 1972.”

TOMRA is the world leader in reverse vending machine solutions. The company has approximately 80,000 installed machines in over 60 markets. Every year TOMRA facilitates the collection of more than 40 billion empty cans and bottles and provides retailers and other customers with an effective and efficient way of collecting, sorting, and processing these containers.

“Our material recovery business includes the pick-up, transportation, and processing of used beverage containers,” explains Tove at TOMRA. “Each year, TOMRA Collection products and services contribute to about 4 million tons in avoided CO2 emissions”.

In addition to savings in CO2 emission, we can avoid plastic containers decomposing into microplastics, which is currently a huge problem to aquatic and marine ecosystems, and land resources from the mining industry when the need of virgin aluminum and silica is reduced

TOMRA is the technology leader, and Scanfil is their trusted manufacturing partner

TOMRA and Scanfil have been working together for over a decade. Scanfil is the preferred manufacturing partner in reverse vending machines.

“Tomra and Scanfil entered into a strategic partnership in 2005 and Scanfil has continuously developed the manufacturing and supply chain services together with Tomra in order to meet their high market demands for availability and flexibility”, says Sales Director Lars Skanke at Scanfil.

Scanfil is proud of being TOMRA’s manufacturing partner and helping them and the world recycle and recuse materials to save natural resources and reduce CO2 emissions.

Medical technology and device companies have unique requirements when selecting a manufacturing partner. ISO-13485 medical device certification is a must, but it’s only a baseline. It takes years for a contract manufacturer to develop accurate and precise processes, establish a network of suppliers for high-quality components, and have the knowledge, resources, and experience to ensure that products meet individual country and worldwide specifications and regulations. Considerations for selection include location, manufacturing capabilities, the breadth of services, quality, and a trustworthy team.

“Scanfil has perfected the ability to integrate its manufacturing knowledge and its way of producing products with the specialized and demanding highly-regulated and defined requirements for medical products and technology,” says Mats Lindblad, director for global quality for Scanfil. “One auditor highlighted Scanfil’s way of utilizing highly modern production methods while complying with high regulatory demands without compromising either.”

One of Scanfil’s medical customers is Jolife. Scanfil’s journey with Jolife, a part of Stryker, started more than 20 years ago. Back then, Jolife AB was a small start-up company located in Lund, Sweden. The company developed and launched the LUCAS chest compression system, which redefined emergency care and helped save lives. It is also a good example of a long and successful manufacturing partnership.

The LUCAS system is now in its third generation. Sara Lindroth, managing director of Jolife AB, a part of Stryker, says, “During our partnership over the last two decades, we have successfully passed many audits by regulatory authorities and have seen steady growth of sold units on a global market.”

For the past 25 years, Scanfil has served companies developing products for medtech, life science, and environmental measurement and analysis. Scanfil has around 3,200 employees with nine factories worldwide in Europe, North America and Asia. These factories offer engineering, development, manufacturing of PCBAs and various mechanics, box build and complex systems integration, distribution, and reverse logistics services.
