Jorma envisioned a company focused on manufacturing ventilation filters the market of which looked promising as filters sold in Finland were\u00a0almost entirely\u00a0and expensive imported product. The company was also planning to produce vehicle and specialty filters.<\/p>\n<p>The first shareholders of Scanfil were Jorma, his older brothers, his brother-in-law and Riitta\u2019s father who\u00a0invested an equal share in the company\u2019s capital. Filters did not sell particularly well. Luckily, the company had invested in machines to process metal sheets needed for filters, which became the basis of new business for Scanfil: mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0move into mechanics and the\u00a0issues\u00a0created by\u00a0Sievi\u2019s\u00a0location\u00a0500 kms\u00a0north of\u00a0Helsinki\u00a0made\u00a0Jorma Takanen realize that\u00a0in order\u00a0to succeed, Scanfil had to assemble, manufacture, and process customer parts in-house as much as possible as it made no sense to send half-finished metal parts from Sievi all the way to Helsinki for processing as their competitors did. By doing more themselves, margins would increase and\u00a0customer service would improve. However, it was a bold move as Jorma did not have\u00a0expertise\u00a0in electronics.<\/p>\n<p>In 1980\u2019s Scanfil also\u00a0purchased\u00a0a refrigerator equipment manufacturer\u00a0Dinsi\u00a0Oy and an electronics engineering company\u00a0Elacon\u00a0Oy.<\/p>\n<p>With the purchase of\u00a0Eletrovieska,\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0customer base expanded\u00a0to\u00a0Oy Kone Ab.\u00a0Around\u00a0this time, long-lasting relationships were\u00a0also\u00a0built with Vaisala Oy\u00a0and Oy Nokia Ab. Scanfil\u2019s plant in Oulu near Nokia\u2019s premises was inaugurated in early June 1991. With its new facility, the company grew outside of Sievi. The plant was a heavy project and a huge investment. Jorma Takanen summed it up: \u201cGrowth slowed a bit in 1991, but even\u00a0then\u00a0we didn\u2019t go backwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key factor to\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0survival was that it\u00a0was\u00a0lean\u00a0long before Toyota\u2019s management philosophy became widely known worldwide. The key elements included\u00a0eliminating\u00a0non-value-adding activities and involving employees, while the savings were made possible by top-tier machinery and technology. These factors helped the company out of the recession, alongside Nokia\u2019s spectacular rise.<\/p>\n<p>Scanfil had supplied Nokia with NMT base-station cabinets for a long time, but orders practically exploded as GSM drove demand. Additionally, electronics was quickly emerging as Finland\u2019s largest industrial sector boosting exports. The Oulu plant, which had caused so many anxious moments, suddenly became the enabler of the growth. Scanfil also built a new plant in the Helsinki metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<p>Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0turnover increased 3.5-fold between 1995 and 1998, rising to more than half a billion marks (about \u20ac146 million). At the same time, headcount almost doubled to just over 730.\u00a0The sons of Jorma and Riitta Takanen, Jarkko and Harri, also joined the family business permanently.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the remarkable growth driven by Nokia, Scanfil\u2019s management increasingly found themselves asking if the dominance of a single main customer was a threat or an opportunity. But reducing Nokia\u2019s share of Scanfil\u2019s revenue was nearly impossible, as the company and its order volumes continued to grow. Boosted by Nokia, of course.<\/p>\n<p>However, in\u00a0early\u00a02000 warning signals began to gather over the global internet frenzy\u00a0as technology stocks turned downward in the US. Nokia\u2019s share value started to erode later in the same year. The bursting of the IT bubble\u00a0hit severely\u00a0the network\u00a0business\u00a0which was a vital part of\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s<br \/>\nbusiness.\u00a0Fortunately,\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0telco\u00a0portfolio also included equipment\u00a0for GSM and fixed networks, which provided the much-needed\u00a0income\u00a0during\u00a0the challenging\u00a0years\u00a0ahead.<\/p>\n<p>By 2001, the \u2018jet-set\u2019 life in contract manufacturing had come to an end and consolidations began as telecom giants outsourced more production to contract manufacturers who were required to deliver products increasingly in a finished state. Soon after American contract manufacturer\u00a0Flextronics<br \/>\nbought Finnish Ojala-Yhtym\u00e4 to offer services from Finland, Scanfil merged with Wecan Eletronics Oyj, a listed company, to include motherboards in their manufacturing services. The first investment was a factory in\u00a0Biatorb\u00e1gy, Hungary, which however\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a success\u00a0mainly due to\u00a0the rapidly rising China. In Hungary, you could hire 3 people for the cost of a single Finnish employee but in China, the number was more than 10.<\/p>\n<p>Scanfil\u00a0had come to a possession of a Chinese plant in Suzhou through the\u00a0Wecan\u00a0merger which also included a factory in\u00a0P\u00e4rnu, Estonia.\u00a0In 2003, it\u00a0acquired\u00a0a second unit in China, a mechanics factory in Hangzhou.<\/p>\n<p>These acquisitions weren\u2019t enough for Scanfil because in early 2003, it announced the purchase of Alcatel\u2019s Hoboken mechanical factory which produced units for ADSL broadband networks in the quest to extend their customer base.<\/p>\n<p>Rapid internationalization was visible in\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0personnel numbers: before 2001,\u00a0Scanfil\u00a0had zero employees working abroad. Three years later,\u00a0over\u00a01,300 employees\u00a0worked\u00a0in foreign units.<\/p>\n<p>Internationalization changed\u00a0Scanfil\u00a0in other respects, too. The company began to reduce its Finnish factory network by selling the former Kemppi unit in\u00a0Hollola\u00a0and the Paimio factory. His short term as the CEO was turbulent. The Hoboken factory\u00a0acquired\u00a0in 2003 was closed only three years later because Alcatel began shifting its orders to China. Company\u2019s trusted customers ABB, Vaisala and KONE experienced a growth spurt in the 2000s, which increased the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW207062615 BCX8\">\u00a0order log<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW207062615 BCX8\">\u00a0for Scanfil. New customers included Vacon Oyj (later part of Danfoss Ab) and the Slot Machine Association (today part of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW207062615 BCX8\">Veikkaus<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW207062615 BCX8\">\u00a0Oy).<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW207062615 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even though\u00a0Scanfil\u2019s\u00a0strong cash position, good reputation and reliability and Chinese production capacity\u00a0helped the transition to industrial electronics,\u00a0growth came slowly, one customer at a time. The\u00a0two\u00a0factories in China produced\u00a0record results throughout the 2000s. The company issued positive profit warnings, and profits tripled during 2013. Year after he joined the company as CEO, Scanfil acquired Schaltex Systems GmbH, a German electronics contract manufacturer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">The deal soon proved to be a warm-up<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">. In autumn 2014, Scanfil<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\"> began preparing another, giant-scale <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">acquisition of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">\u00a0Swedish contract manufacturer\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW193520312 BCX8\">PartnerTech<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">\u00a0AB<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\"> &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">one of Sweden\u2019s industrial crown jewels.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">Originally founded in 1906 to produce oak furniture, the company gained fame for its Facit mechanical calculators and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">ultimately developed<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193520312 BCX8\">\u00a0into an electronics and mechanics manufacturer comparable to Scanfil.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"EOP SCXW51769175 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">There were many reasons why <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW70190593 BCX8\">PartnerTech<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0attracted Scanfil. Firstly, it<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0was good-sized\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\"> served primarily Swedish customers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">. Secondly, most of its factories were\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">reasonably profitable<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0mostly\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">located<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0elsewhere than\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW70190593 BCX8\">Scanfil\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">The company<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0had four production sites in Sweden, two in Poland, and one in Norway, Finland, the United Kingdom, China, and the United States.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0In May, the largest deal in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW70190593 BCX8\">Scanfil\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW70190593 BCX8\">\u00a0history was announced, making the company the leading Nordic EMS.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW70190593 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The integration work was demanding due to some of PartnerTech\u2019s loss-making factories. Over the next years, the factories in Norway, UK, Finland and China were closed and two units in Sweden sold. Scanfil\u2019s unit in Hungary was also closed to \u201cbalance the sheets\u201d between the two companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the aim of building a true\u00a0Finnish-Swedish\u00a0company and keeping the Swedish customer base, the Scanfil board took in its first non-Finnish members: Bengt Engstr\u00f6m and Christina Lindstedt.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The efforts were successful and\u00a0Scanfil gained several new major customers, including NIBE Industrier AB (heat pumps), INVISIO Communications AB (tactical communications and hearing protection), Toyota Material Handling (forklifts), and Tomra Group (reverse vending machines). However, thanks to\u00a0efficient\u00a0countermeasures, Scanfil achieved the best result of its history\u00a0(by then) in the middle of the pandemic and material shortage in 2021. Revenue grew by more than 15 percent to almost \u20ac700 million.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In Autumn 2022 after a decade of impressive achievements as the CEO, Petteri Jokitalo announce he would step down from his role.
